Young Inventors Produce Bricks From Waste

KUCHING: Wilson Mujang Nyuwak and Sharifah Badriatul Afiqah Wan Madihi did Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Betong proud by winning the first prize in the Intellectual Property Young Inventors Category of the National Intellectual Property Award (AHIN) 2013 Sarawak Zone held here yesterday.

Their presentation was entitled ‘The Potential of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) in the Production of Brick — From Waste to Wealth’.

The talented duo beat seven other finalist teams from throughout the state, bagging RM500, medals, certificates and the opportunity to represent Sarawak at the national-level finals later this year.

In second place was Jacqueline Lau Chung Ling and Sabrina Tang Mei Lin of SMK Bandar Sibu for presenting ‘The Wonderful Magical Spring’ while third place went to Nadzmi Nazrin Monil, Mas Izzatul Mirrah, Nadhilah Saleh, Azah Umairah Sari’ee and Najib Hakim Harith Saparruddin of SMK Asajaya for their ‘VSE (Vehicle Smart Eye)’.

The teams won RM300 and RM200 respectively along with medals and certificates.

Organised by Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), AHIN — Intellectual Property Young Inventors Category is held in conjunction with the National Intellectual Property Day with 31 teams from secondary schools in Sarawak shortlisted to eight teams during the preliminary rounds.

“This category is held in six zones throughout Malaysia namely the north, central, south, east coast, Sabah and Sarawak. The six winning teams from these zones will go on to compete at the national level finals,” said Kamal Kormin, MyIPO head of examination (Applied Science Section), Patent Division.

According to him, the annual event enables Form 1 to 5 students to participate in a competition to encourage creativity among youths.

“The winning team at the finals will be awarded RM7,000, medal and certificate while the first and second runners-up will get RM5,000 and RM3,000 respectively as well as medals and certificates,” he revealed.

Also present was MyIPO head of Sarawak branch, Sakas Sanggeng.
