KUCHING: A Young Entrepreneurs Carnival (Karnival Usahawan Muda) organised by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) in collaboration with the Batu Lintang campus of Teachers Training Institute here yesterday attracted an enthusiastic crowd of over 1000, entrepreneurs and youths interested in setting up their own business.
Over 70 participants including trainee teachers of the campus set up various stalls showcasing among others food, drinks, clothing, health and beauty products
Other activities lined up for the day were entrepreneur hunt, ‘Online Millionaire’ talk by SSM Corporate Communication Chief Mohamad Shahren Mohamad Yusri and also ‘Icon/Success Story’ talk by founder of d’Herbs Dato Aliff Syukri.
SSM chief executive officer Dato Zahrah Abdul Wahab Fenner, who was at the carnival, told reporters that she was happy to note there were students among those who visited the stalls as one of the objectives of the carnival was to inculcate interest of entrepreneurship among them.
“The reason why we organise this programme is to raise awareness to online entrepreneurs in terms of online businesses,
the procedures involved in setting it up, as well as the risks involved.
“Aside from that we also hope to instil the values of integrity in doing businesses,” she said.
SSM had also organised a similar carnival nationwide called the SSM Online Networking Entrepreneurs (One) Carnival this year as a platform for online entrepreneurs to register with the network.
“Through registration, they can get a lot of opportunities and benefits such as gaining confidence of the public to invest or deal with their company,” she said.
Zahrah said SSM also plan to launch a program to promote entrepreneurship among youths in higher learning institutes next year.
“According to our statistics, there are more than 42 000 online businesses nationwide and that is why SSM is playing a vital role in raising awareness on online businesses,” she said.
Through awareness, she hoped that new online entrepreneurs could learn more about online business aside from picking up skills such as branding and promoting their products.
