KUCHING: The Royal Malaysia Police Safe Camera (Safecam) partnership will help to reduce crime in the city.
State Police Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Sabtu Osman said the programme would enable members of the public and private sector to share information on crime.
“This is part of the effort by the police to work together with the government and private sector,” he said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Safe Cam Partnership between the Police, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) here yesterday.
Mohd Sabtu also called on other sectors to take part in the partnership by signing up with the police.
“Before this, CCTVs were used after incidents but now they are used to convey information,” he said, adding that the programme would be extended to other divisions in the state.
Meanwhile, Datuk Bandar of Kuching North Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said the Ministry of Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government had given allocations for installation of 44 CCTVs in crime prone areas.
“All the CCTVs are not operating yet and they will be handed over to DBKU and MBKS. 20 CCTVs will be under MBKS jurisdiction while the rest in DBKU areas,” said Abdul Wahap.
Also present were state Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Dr Chai Khin Chung.
