KUCHING: The proposed underpass located at DatukAbang Haji Kipali roundabout in Petra Jaya and the four-lane access road from Matang Lee Ling to Stapok will start construction this March.

According to Infrastructure Development Assistant Minister Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, the underpass project, which would cost RM60 million, will take around 20 months to complete.

“Meanwhile, the new Matang-Stapok four-lane access road with a bridge will cost RM140 million and will take 30 months to be completed, and we are still waiting the final plan from the consultant,” said Daud.

He was met by reporters after officiating at the Public Service Commission (SPA) ‘Outreach’ seminar at Kampung Pinang Jawa here yesterday.

“The new access road will be an alternative for those from this side of Kuching to go straight to Kuching International Airport and no toll will be charged,” he said.

Earlier at the event, Daud, also Tupong assemblyman, in his speech reminded participants of the seminar not to only look at the government sector for vacancies.

“The recruitment by SPA might only involve 10 per cent from the total applicants, and the rest should not waste their time waiting for an answer from SPA,” said Daud.

“There are various initiatives and opportunities given by the government, especially in industries and entrepreneurship,” he added.

He also said the extension of retirement period from age 55 to 60 directly translates into a longer time for posts to fall vacant.

“With more graduates produced annually, the challenge to seek jobs is getting tougher and graduates must take the challenge,” said Daud.

The Outreach seminar yesterday was attended by over 200 participants ranging from school leavers, graduates and the public.

Also present were organising chairperson Sharifah Aisah Tuanku Fauzi and state SPA secretary Abdul Halim Abg Naili.
