Assistant Minister of Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion) Datuk Julaihi Narawai said a study had proven that the areas had a suitable eco-system for the rearing of such species because they were free from pollution.
“The government is carrying out various initiatives to improve the livelihood of fishermen in the areas,” he said at the launch of the department and fishermen community get-together at Sebuyau Area Fishermen Association premises yesterday.
He added that 2.5 metric tonnes of clams worth about RM50,000 were being reared at Tanjung Melaban in Sebuyau.
“With such initiative being taken by the government, we hope it could improve the income of fishermen,” he said.
He went on to say that the safety of the fishermen was also being taken care of where directional light worth about RM130,000 each had been installed at Maludam and Tebelu.
Julaihi, who is also Assistant Minister of Rural Development, also said the construction of a boat ramp and mini slipway had been approved for the Sebuyau constituency.
Such facilities would greatly benefit the fishermen in the area because they would not have to repair their boats at private dockyards.
State Marine Fisheries Department deputy director Bohari Leng, Ministry of Rural Development’s principal assistant secretary, Ahmad Denny Ahmad Fauzi, Sebuyau administrative officer Ajis Ahmad and state PBB Youth exco member Yusuf Buji were among those present at the function.
They also released 8,000 Siakap fish fry at Sebuyau River mouth.
