SIBU: The initiatives implemented by police under the National Key Result Areas (NKRA) as well as those under National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS), have begun to yield positive results in terms of crime fighting.

Deputy Home Affairs Minister II Masir Kujat stated among the NKRA initiatives was the replacement of ageing patrolling multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) with newer models.

“The (police) motorcycle patrol units nationwide receive additional 818 (motorcycles) to the existing 2,000 units.

“It is hoped that with the addition, it would give better impact to the unit members in carrying out their crime prevention duties,” he said after officiating at the 1Aman Week Sibu 2015 on Sibu Town Square Phase II yesterday, which was also attended by the ministry’s deputy secretary-general (security policy) Dato Sri Adenan Ab Rahman, Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee.

Masir, who is Sri Aman MP, also mentioned that 31 activities under NBOS had been established.  However, he said there were 11 being actively run so far such as the special female personnel unit Amanita, ‘Go-To-Safety-Points’ in crime hotspot areas, appointment of auxiliary police personnel for the private sector, and the appointment of former policemen as heads of neighbourhood’s safety committees.

The 1Aman Week, he pointed out, was also an initiative aimed at raising awareness of crime-fighting and prevention among members of the public, especially the youths. He also acknowledged that under the NBOS, there were joint patrols between police and army, as well as those between police and the private sector.

Having said this, Masir was optimistic that with the implementation of the 1Aman Week programme, it could help in reducing crime rates across the state. He also stressed on the importance of concerted efforts by all quarters in the fight against crime, pointing out that such responsibility should not be shouldered by the force alone, but also by governmental and non-governmental bodies as well as the communities.

“This programme will help build closer rapport between police and the communities that they are serving.

“It will facilitate dissemination of information related to crimes.”

Masir also welcomed the move by police, especially the state contingent, in coming up with ‘Police and Community’ concept.

The programme yesterday hosted an array of activities such as special demonstrations by members of the force including extreme motorcycle-riding, car-driving, parachute-jumping as well as tracking by the K9 Unit, children’s colouring contest, free health screening, a blood donation drive, and registration counters ‘Rakan Cop’.
