Sarawak Energy Offers 50 Scholarships

KUCHING: State power company Sarawak Energy is offering 50 scholarships this year to high performing students. Sarawak Energy launched the external scholarship programme in 2014.


According to Sarawak Energy’s vice-president for People and Leadership Development, Siti Aisah Adenan, young Sarawakians who have done well academically in school and are active in extra-curricular activities are encouraged to apply.


“Last year, when we first introduced the external scholarship programme, we received over a hundred applicants and upon selection, 30 were granted scholarships totalling RM1.35million.


“Sarawak Energy will provide funds for tuition and examination fees for tertiary level scholars in various technical and non-technical disciplines at recognised colleges and universities in Malaysia.


“We are one of the biggest employers in the state with over 4,000 employees and the energy provider for SCORE,” she said in a press statement.


The scholarship supports courses for Diploma and Bachelor Degree in Engineering / Science or non-engineering fields. The Engineering / Science category includes Electrical Power, Mechanical, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science and Management, Environmental, Telecommunication and Civil.


In non-engineering fields, applicants can pursue careers in Safety, Legal, Quantity Surveying, Finance, Accounting, Internal Audit, Communications, Information Technology, Human Resources and Arts among others.


Applicants must not be more than 21 years old at the time of application; have secured an unconditional offer or admission letter into an approved institution of higher learning in Malaysia; not a recipient of other scholarship from other organisations or foundations; have strong leadership skills, team player and active participation in extra-curricular activities, and not have other sibling or family member receiving this scholarship.


Applicants have to chose public institutions and universities in Malaysia; JPA-approved private institutions of higher learning in Malaysia; JPA-approved international universities based in Malaysia; Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) Accredited for Degrees and Engineering Degree Programme recognised by the Board of Engineering Malaysia (BEM).


Scholarship can be obtained at any stage of higher education be it matriculation, foundation or any semester or final year of programme. Applicants must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 3.0 or equivalent for their Matriculation, Diploma or Degree.


Those who had just completed their SPM or STPM need a minimum of 7As in the SPM or minimum of 3As and 1B in the STPM in subjects like English, Mathematics, Malay Language, Additional Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, History, Biology, Principles of Account, Commerce, Basic Economics, Geography, Islamic Education, Moral Education, Arabic Language, Tassawur Islam and Syariah Islam Studies.
