MARUDI: Teachers, particularly in rural schools, have been asked to commit themselves to their postings.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said teachers need to settle down in the schools they are posted to and fully concentrate on their jobs.

“Always be on the lookout for ways to improve teaching quality for your students. I believe if these components complement each other, coupled with programmes being put in place by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, our future generations will be of world-class standard and be able to compete with anyone,” he said when launching the SK9 Long Bedian school sports meet recently.

“Since quality learning goes well beyond competence, rural students find it difficult even to conceptualise it. Even though teachers know that almost all students have no desire to go further than competence, the staff must continue to strive for quality and should not settle for minimum goals.”

He called on teachers to ensure students experience the joy of learning to motivate them to work hard, which would then lead to quality.

“If our students are to compete in today’s highly competitive world of quality products and services, we have no choice but to push our goals forward from competence to quality.

“The ideal world of yesterday has become the real world today. Teachers must not allow a student to sit in the class and say to themselves ‘I can’t improve’ or ‘I am a failure’, all of which are common to students in schools, especially in the rural area,” he explained.

SK9 Long Bedian is the only school in Sarawak where students can continue their studies from preschool level up to Form 3.

There are currently more than 500 students at the school.
