SIBU: Rajang Port Authority’s (RPA) total revenue continues to grow by six per cent, achieving RM30.9 million last year and posting a net profit after tax of RM6 million, advocating total quality.

RPA general manager Helen Lim Hui Shyan who disclosed this at its Quality Day 2013 here on Wednesday added their only remaining operation centre in 2012 posted a growth of 4.5 per cent in throughput, registering 1,815,000 tonnes to the previous year of 1,742,000 tonnes.

“Our strategic business unit in the handling of containers has proven to be successful again as we have achieved an increase in total containers, up to almost 90,000 TEUs last year.

“It is with this that I am proud to inform that RPA’s Sibu centre has been able to continue in its streak of improved performance,” Lim said.

Boosted by their good performance, she called for concerted efforts to achieve at least 90,000 TEUs this year.

Lim mentioned that in an environment of continuous challenge, RPA needs to be constantly in the state of readiness.

“Just as any other port or business, we need to redefine ourselves from time to time to stay relevant and to contribute toward total growth and progress.

“We need to position ourselves and to establish our way forward. And most of all, we need to assure and reassure all those present who are associated with us that with every challenge, we face it with twice as much determination and three times as much effort,” she said.

Quality, she said, has been embedded as part of the organisation’s culture.

Earlier, giving a brief background of RPA, she said it serves as a component in the total logistic chain of moving cargo, goods and services and people.

RPA serves as a link in trade and economy, she added.

“The functions of a port and therefore that of RPA do not deviate much from any other port, be it in this region, country or in the world.

“However, how each port functions and how we function depends very much on where we are situated and our size which determines our strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities,” Lim noted.

Among those present were RPA chairman Vincent Goh, Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee and president of Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) Hu Yu Siong.
