MIRI: Local youths are advised to be responsible netizens by not spreading unverified information and rumours on social media.
Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said care must be taken to ensure what is shared online is genuine to avoid disseminating ‘fake’ news.
“The fourth industrial revolution which is developing rapidly today has allowed more access to a vast array of gadgets and social media sites.
“Hence, as the foundation and future assets of our state and country, the youths must know how to use social media wisely. Using it to its fullest extent can benefit you but if misused, it can destroy the country and even yourself,” he said.
Speaking when officiating the closing of the Baram Cup Closed Dayak and Invitation Badminton Team Championship at Piasau Boat Club here yesterday, Penguang urged youths to analyse whatever they see online and to use their discretion before sharing it.
On the competition, organised by Se-Tech Badminton Club and Baram Youth in collaboration with Miri Badminton Association and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Penguang said it was a good platform to not only unearth new talents, but also to promote healthy lifestyle and foster friendship amongst participants.
More than 180 players from Kuching, Bintulu, Belaga, Lawas, Limbang and Miri took part in the two-day competition, which saw SeTech-Baram Youth A and Ara teams emerge the respective overall champion in the men and women categories.
Also present at the ceremony were Mulu assemblyman Dato Gerawat Gala, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, Se-Tech chairman Stephen Avun and organising chairman Cr Dominic Nyurang Ajang.
