KUCHING: The Housing and Urban Development Ministry says it will source for funds to build a new dormitory at Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng Home for the Aged.

Its minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said a fund-raising activity for the building, estimated to cost RM3 million, would commence soon.

The 6-storey building will be used to house the elderly residents of the non-profit organisation located at Sekama Road here.

“In addition to federal and state government funding, I hope kind-hearted members of the public will also take part in the fund raising,” said Abang Johari during a visit to the premises yesterday.

He pointed out that charity work disregards races or backgrounds and that festive seasons such as Hari Raya are also a time for charitable contributions.

“Sarawak is a model of racial harmony, mutual cooperation and understanding.

“The state government will not hesitate to support and assist the organisation in seeking funds so that they will be able to continue their objective to help the less fortunate,” he said.

Meanwhile, in conjunction with the Raya celebration, Hun Nam Siang Tng distributed food essentials to 53 Malay families. The items included rice, cooking oil, noodles, sugar, beef, chicken, canned goods, soft drinks, eggs and more.

Chairman Datuk Tay Thian Siong also donated RM50 worth of ‘duit raya’ to each household.

He expressed his hope that with the ministry’s assistance, the construction of the new building would be speeded up.
