5. ITTO-supported Projects
A) Development of Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary as a Totally Protected Area, Phase IV
(April 2007 – 2009)
Development of Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary (LEWS) as a Totally Protected Area (TPA)
is a continuation from Phases I, II and III, which were implemented from 1992 to 2004.
Phase IV began in April 2007 for a period of 24 months. The objective of the project is to
pursue to the development of LEWS and Batang Ai National Park (BANP) collectively into a
model for biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of genetic resources.
The specific objectives are: (a) to strengthen sustainable management capacity of the TPA at
the Government and local communities’ level; (b) to enhance conservation and research
potentials of the TPA, including transboundary initiatives with Indonesia.
LEWS Project Activities in 2009:
i. Community-based activities:
a. Fish culture
Construction of three (3) valley ponds at Rh. Jepun and Rh. Blawan in Ulu Kanowit
and Rh. Jaong in Ulu Engkari were completed in July 2009. Under this project, Forest
Department Sarawak/ITTO provides building materials and initial stock of fish fry and
feed to the local community.
b. Tagang system
Zoning of rivers was carried out at Ng. Ngemah and Ulu Engkari in March and
November 2009 respectively. The rivers were divided according to signboards which
indicated different zones such as red, yellow and green zones. The red zone is a
spawning zone where fishing is strictly prohibited. Yellow zone is for controlled
fishing, while green zone is where normal fishing is permitted. There were also
signboards to inform and to warn the outsiders about this project.
