b. Crop cultivation
More than 60 families in the villages of Long Lobang, Ba’ Tik A & B, Long Sabai and
Ba’ Medamot benefited from on-farm training in fruit tree and vegetable planting and
their maintenance. The training included the making of compost for fertilizers.
Gardening tools such as hoes, spades and machete (parang) were provided free to
the participants.
c. Penan birth certificates (BC) and identity cards (IC) registration
Subsequent to the registration in Bario and Ba’ Kelalan in 2008, a third exercise was
carried out from 12-18 April 2009 in Long Banga and Samling’s Kelisa camp. 66
Penan was registered (14-BC, 52-IC) including 42 Kenyah (28-BC, 14-IC), two (2)
Kelabit (BC), five (5) Sa’ban (4-BC, 1 IC) and two (2) Iban (IC).
ii. Environmental education and awareness programme
a. Environmental education and awareness programme for school children in Bario, Ba’
Kelalan and Pa’ Dalih:
No. Location
1 Bario – This programme was conducted in SMK Bario from 23-25 July 2009 and
participated by 108 students from of 2 to 3. As for the primary school – SK Bario, the
programme was conducted from 22-24 October 2009 and participated by 52 students
of primary 4 to 6.
2 Pa’ Dalih – This programme was conducted from 19-21 October 2009 and
participated by 14 students of primary 4 to 6.
3 Ba’ Kelalan – The programme was carried out from 19-20 June 2009 participated by
45 students of primary 4 to 6.
b. Tree identification training
This training was conducted from 27-30 July 2009 for school students in Ba’ Kelalan
to introduce them to the basic knowledge on plant identification and to boost interest
on plant science. The course was led by ITTO-PTNP Project Manager, Dr. Paul Chai.
This training programme was participated by 70 students of 3 to 6.
