FOREST DEPARTMENT SARAWAK
ANNUAL REPORT 2009

5. Geospatial Data

The Department continued to provide updated forestry related information in the form of
analog and digital thematic mapping layers at various coverage and scales. The main

routine activities were production of maps and satellite imageries, data conversion, updating
and refinement were done in general establishment and maintenance of the information

system. Acquisition of data was also carried out. The various sources of data are the satellite
imageries, hyperspectral imageries and various series of topographic maps of Sarawak.

6. Mapping Activities

Data updating and verification were the major activities carried out in 2009 which included
Permanent Forest Estate, National Parks and Timber Harvesting. Digital mapping has

replaced all mapping on operation basis such as in licence renewal, updating forest cover,
status of logging roads and general mapping requirement for in-house use, State agencies

as well as Federal agencies.

7. Implementation of Log Tracking System (LOTS)

LOTS is a computerized program tailored to capture and monitor the sequential processes

used to record the details and volume of logs felled by respective licensee or contractor,
details and volume of logs royalty assessed and the movement of logs from one place to

another. LOTS started when Computerized Timber Royalty Billing System was installed in the
Forest Department in March 1999 and has been running state wide connecting all four

regional offices since then.

The objectives of LOTS are to monitor the movement of logs from felling points to sawmill

and export points and detect any illegal movement of logs thus preventing any illegal logs
entering the production chain.
