E very five years of Sarawak’s independence in Malaysia is documented

with books reporting on the colourful achievements of the State. This
year marks the 45 year of our long journey. Again, the main
th
organising committee has decided that each Administrative Division in Sarawak
through the Resident’s Office to come up with books to portray our success
over these years.

Kuching, being the principal and earliest Administrative Division in Sarawak,
naturally has a long and varied history. It is not only the seat of the State
Capital and Government, but also the main gateway into southern Sarawak
by air. Here, in Kuching, it is the melting pot of culture and people in
Sarawak. All developments in the Cat City here has specific values for the
people. It is the people who drive the developments and it is the Government who
provides for it. The close co-operation between the people and the Government
enables the smooth development of this Division. The success of many people-
oriented development programmes here is the result of the able leadership
of YAB Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, the Honourable Chief Minister
of Sarawak.

I wish to congratulate the authors/writers and the Working Committee of this book
project for their untiring efforts and dedication for the work that was obviously
no easy task. This book has a fascinating mixture of old and new subjects,
highlighted by the colour and monochrome pictures, which give a clear picture of
Kuching. I am sure this will be a pleasure for every one who read it.
