I n 2008 we celebrated the 45 th year where Sarawak prospered in Malaysia.
This is a significant achievement for a state like ours which began from
humble roots. The 45 anniversary is celebrated from 2008 through

to September 2009 to mark our achievements over the past decades. As a Chief
Minister, I could understand the hard and arduous journey of this Land of
the Hornbills during those trying years.
This book on the prosperity of Kuching Division not only commemorates the
joyous occasion, it will also fill in part of the overall development picture of
the State. Development and prosperity could only be achieved via the peaceful
and stable political environment of the State. The rapid development of the
Division and State offers a better standard of living for all in respect of utilities,
social services, health, employment, trade, industries, communication and
opportunities.
The documentation in this book is a gift to the people of Sarawak as it comes
at the end of the celebration. Much has been done and more need to be
implemented to achieve our objectives of a caring Government. I take this
opportunity to invite everyone of us to look back into the past in order to forge
ahead with new development plans in future. Each development phase must
be recorded and documented with specific accuracy so that our future
generation can reminisce on it.
I take this opportunity to congratulate the book committee and all those who
have in one way or another contributed to the success of this edition. I am
sure this book will be another valuable heritage to our society.
