MIRI: The government will help Long Seridan fire victims to rebuild their longhouse through various programmes.
Nine families lost their homes in the fire, which occurred around 5pm on Sunday.
“I sympathise with the fire victims on the unfortunate incident and am also thankful there are no casualties,” said
State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala, who flew to Long Seridan on Monday.
Gerawat said the fire victims have received immediate relief assistance such as food and clothing, while the school-going children will also receive uniforms and books.
The Mulu assemblyman praised the villagers for their quick action, which prevented the fire from destroying a nearby church and more houses.
“The villagers were cooperative, including the Penan who helped to control the fire from spreading to other nearby buildings and I hope the spirit of cooperation will continue to ensure the community can benefit,” he said.
He presented a personal donation of RM3,000 to the fire victims, while RM8,267 came from Rurum Kelabit Sarawak,
RM4,156 from the Orang Ulu golfers, while clothing and blankets came from the Malaysian Red Crescent Miri chapter.
Gerawat added that Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas also announced a grant of RM10,000 to help rebuild the longhouse.
Those wishing to help the fire victims can channel their contributions through Rurum Kelabit Sarawak.
Earlier last month, Long Seridan’s health clinic was also destroyed in a fire. A new site has been identified to rebuild the clinic.
Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) flew three villagers here for further medical assistance including a former community leader and a disabled child.
