The RM1 billion water treatment plant in Tanjung Manis is expected to be completed end of the year.
TANJUNG MANIS: The state government is fast tracking the implementation of ‘prerequisite infrastructure’ such as water, electricity and telecommunication to woo investors to Tanjung Manis.
Belawai assemblyman Datu Len Talif Salleh said currently power supplies to Tanjung Manis had reached 400MW, and the telecommunication infrastructure was now being implemented using fibre optics to cater for high-speed internet service and other communication services.
“As for water supply, the new treatment plant costing some RM1 billion will be completed by the end of this year. The new treatment plant would complete the ‘prerequisite amenities’ that Tanjung Manis urgently needs in order to entice investors to invest in a wide range of industries,” Len told The Borneo Post Adventure Team (BAT) V here yesterday.
He added that the new treatment plant would also cater for the needs of the people living in the vicinity as well as coastal areas, including those living in Pulau Bruit, Matu and Daro.
“Tanjung Manis will become a major industrial hub for the central region in the future, that includes the vast hinterland in Belaga and Kapit,” said Len.
The Assistant Minister in the chief minister’s office (Technical Training) disclosed that among the identified industries that have big potential to be developed in Tanjung Manis are oil and gas, shipbuilding, timber-based industry, deep-sea fishing, Halal Hub as well as an education and technical training hub.
“It is hoped that Tanjung Manis will evolve into a vibrant eco growth centre and regional port city in tandem with the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) development in uplifting Sarawak into a developed state status.”
Meanwhile, Len Talif disclosed that Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) would build the much needed Tanjung Manis jetty’s pontoons soon to cater for bigger river vessels.
Currently, bigger river vessels such as express boats from Kuching could not berth at Tanjung Manis jetty due to its small pontoon.
“As far as I know, STIDC will a build a bigger pontoon soon. So once it is completed, passengers from Kuching using express boats need not stop at Kampung Rajang jetty and take another land transport to Tanjung Manis,” he said.
However, Len Talif was unsure when STIDC would implement the project, but it was widely speculated that it would cost at least RM6 million.
