KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Ministry of Youth and Sports intends to set up a mini sports complex with a recreational concept near Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

Its secretary general Datuk Jamil Salleh said the complex would be a replacement for the present one at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce which had been turned into the university’s medical faculty.

He also said the complex would consist of various facilities such as futsal court, tennis court, football field, a lake for kayaking as well as a training camp site.

“We will change a bit of the building concept because the site is in a lake area but solid, perhaps based on recreation concept.

“It will be more towards indoor sports and we cannot build it large because the land size is only around 20 acres,” he explained.

He said this after visiting the site of the new complex yesterday.

Jamil believed that the complex would be well patronised because it is near to main roads, housing areas and higher learning centres.

“It will be for the use of people in surrounding areas and students of institutions of higher learning around here.

“The whole project is expected to cost more than RM10 million,” he said.

At the moment, he added, they were identifying the types of sports facilities to be built there.

State Youth and Sports director Abdul Haris Ishak was also present.
