The Department is responsible to carry out its duties as follows:
i. To monitor and audit the establishments of the license Planted Forests pursuant to
the clause 11 of the license;
ii. To carry out the assessment of Tree Planting Plan pursuant to the clause 2 of the 2
nd
schedule of The Forests (Planted Forests) Rules 1997;
iii. To register and maintain a Register Book of licenses issued pursuant to the Rule 21
of The Forests (Planted Forests) Rules 1997; and
iv. To ensure annual payment of license fee and land rent for Planted Forest has been
made pursuant to Rule 28 and 29 of The Forests (Planted Forests) Rules 1997.
1. Planted Area
In 1996, the Forests Ordinance, Cap 126 was amended with the inclusion of section 65B (1)
to provide for the establishment of planted forests. Subsequently, the Forests (Planted
Forests) Rules 1997, was approved and gazetted under section 95 (1) (w) and (x) of the
Forests Ordinance to implement the said amendment.
Until 2009, a total of 43 licences for Planted Forests were issued covering an estimated
plantable area of 1.3 million hectares to major timber groups in Sarawak. The progress of
tree planting in Sarawak for 2009 is outlined in the table below.
