ANNUAL REPORT 2009


The Department is accountable for the constitution of all National Parks, Nature Reserves,

Wildlife Sanctuaries, conservation and management of wildlife as well as issuance of wildlife
permits /licenses and research permits in Sarawak.


1. Areas of Total Protected Areas (TPAs)

By year ending 2009, the accumulative total area of gazetted Totally Protected Areas was
702,768.50 ha (Inclusive of water bodies) with (21) National Parks, five (5) Nature Reserves

and four (4) Wildlife Sanctuaries as summarized in Table 13 below and the details in
Appendix A(i), A(ii) and A(iii).

2. Areas of Gazetted Rehabilitation & Wildlife Centres

The total area of gazetted Rehabilitation & Wildlife Centre was 181.20 ha, comprising
Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Center which is part of Semenggoh Nature Reserves and

Matang Wildlife Centre which is situated at Kubah National Park. (Appendix A(iv)).

3. Issuance of Research Permit

In the year under review, a total of 92 research permits were issued.


4. Permanent Forest Estates (PFEs)

The following are some of the activities which were carried out in the year 2009 and these
areas were published in newspaper in 2010 for proclamation.
