5. Visitors Statistics for National Parks, Nature Reserves and Wildlife Centres
The total number of visitors to National Parks, Nature Reserves, Wildlife Rehabilitation
Centre and Wildlife Centre throughout 2009 were 382,022. These consisted of 277,241
Malaysians and 104,781 foreigners. Details and breakdown of visitor’s statistics are as
stated in Appendix A(v).
6. Wildlife Survey, Monitoring and Rehabilitation programme
Some of the wildlife surveys conducted throughout 2009 were the mini wildlife expedition at
Bukit Lima Nature Reserve in Sibu, mini-wildlife survey at the Proposed Sungai Kenyana
Nature Reserve in Mukah, mini wildlife expedition at Samling SFM area in Ulu Baram and
crocodile surveys at Kuching Wetlands National Park (KWNP) to assess its ecological status
as a result of construction of the flood diversion channel that cut across the Park.
The Department was also collaborating with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) in
conducting surveys of dugong and marine mammals along coastal areas of Sarawak. These
included monitoring of sea grass at its major site near Kuala Lawas.
7. World Heritage Site and its Status (Existing & Proposed sites)
Gunong Mulu National Park in Miri had been inscribed as the only World Heritage Site in
Sarawak and Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary/Batang Ai National Park/Betung Kerihun
National Park also had been nominated as a Trans-border World Heritage Site.
