Sawn-timber
Sarawak recorded a weaker export volume of sawn
timber in 2016 by 8% to 522,088 m³ from 570,474 m³.
The value, however, increased by 7% at RM 786 million
compared to RM732 million in 2015.
The Philippines remained the top consumer of sawn
timber from Sarawak which accounted for 170,261 m³
worth RM267 million followed by the Middle East at
135,939 m³ or RM257 million and Thailand at 72,276
m³ or RM87 million.
Export volume of the sawn timber to the Philippines
and Thailand decreased by 0.49% and 38% respectively
compared to similar period of the previous year. The
Middle East, however, increased consumption by 40%.
The average FOB price of sawn timber rose by 17%
from RM1,283 per m³ in 2015 to RM1,506 per m³ in
2016. (Table 3)
Plywood
In 2016, the export volume of plywood
decreased by 3% to 1.7 million m³ from 1.8
million m³. The export value also dropped
by 10% to RM2.9 billion from RM3.3 billion
compared to the corresponding period last year.
Japan remained the number one importer
of plywood from Sarawak with 967,167
m³ to RM1.8 billion followed by the Middle
East (221,314 m³, RM317 million) and Korea
(210,137 m³, RM318 million).
Export volume to Japan dropped by 7.6%. The
Middle East and Korea, however, increased their
consumption by 54% and 2.5% respectively
compared to the previous year.
The average FOB price of plywood for the year
2016 was lower by 7.3% to RM1,720 from
RM1,856 compared to the same period in
2015. (Table 4)
