Overview

MEITD coordinates scientific research, innovation, and biotechnology initiatives to ensure
they contribute to Sarawak ’s economic diversification and sustainable development. By
aligning research efforts with Sarawak ’s economic priorities, including smart agriculture,
renewable energy, and digital economy, MEITD fosters a robust and interconnected research
ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

1. Integration of Innovation and Research Activities
Facilitating collaboration between research institutions, private sector, and
government agencies to drive innovation.
2. Development of Innovation Clusters
Establishing hubs such as biotechnology parks, digital innovation centres, and
research incubators to strengthen commercialization efforts.
3. Biotechnology Research and Development
Supporting research institutions like CRAUN Research Sdn. Bhd. (sago
research), Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, and Sarawak Tropical Peat Research
Institute in advancing bio-based and sustainable innovations.
4. Public-Private Research Partnerships:
Encouraging industries to participate in research initiatives, leveraging state
resources for commercialization and industrial application.

Roles

MEITD facilitates cross-sectoral research coordination, ensuring that scientific
advancements and biotechnology developments contribute to Sarawak ’s socio-
economic transformation. This involves aligning research with state development
priorities, strengthening industry-academic linkages, and supporting innovation
clusters.
