Indices of ecosystem services inherent in Tropical Rainforests in Sampadi Forest Reserve,
Lundu.
2. Insect Inventory was carried out at Pulong Tau National Park and along the ecotourism trail at
Ulu Arur Dalan to the peak of Tokong Ja'au. The objective of the trip was to conduct insect
inventories as a future guideline on fauna conservation management. The methods used
were pop-up butterfly bait trap, light trap, malaise trap and halogen trap.
3. Participated in the Mentawai Scientific Expedition, Gunung Mulu National Park. The objective
of the expedition was to carry out fauna inventories especially insect inventories within the
stipulated area of HOB. The findings of this expedition will be able to make significant
contributions to the scientific study and records of fauna in Borneo.
4. A study on edible insects was carried out at Ulu Sungai Oya and Kampung Latap, Jalan
Sungai Assan, Sibu. As reported in the local media, rural villages in Sibu and Dalat collected
the moth of caterpillars from the local nyatoh paya trees, and Durian trees which had been a
traditionally important source of protein, but recently were being packaged and sold as a
regional delicacy. Demand was so high that these caterpillars of the Sphingidae cost around
RM350 per kilogram for lelamas nyatoh and RM20 a kilogram for lelamas rian.
Biodiversity Flora Unit
1. Assessment of Phenology Plot at Bako National Park - 5 plot and 132 trees assessed.
2. Scientific expedition to Kubah National Park - 114 specimens collected.
3. Study on Pandanaceae and Sapindaceae at Semengoh, Bau, Kubah National Park and Bako
National Park - 49 specimens.
4. Scientific expedition at Ulu Mentawai, Limbang - 173 specimens.
5. Survey of Aquilaria microcarpa at Bako National Park with staff from FRIM - 10 species were
identified.
6. Survey of Ficus deltoidea with staff of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UNISZA) in Ulu Landeh,
Santubong, Bau and Lundu. - 5 species were identified.
7. Field data collection for the development of hyperspectral applications system in Bako
National Park - 6 plots & 123 trees.
8. Naming trees in the PLKN Camp, Bintulu - 80 trees named.
Mycology Unit
1. In-house expedition in Matang Wildlife Centre from 5 to 11 March 2012. A total of 80 species
mainly from polypores, agarics and boletes were collected.
2. Pulong Tau National Park Field Trip was made from 7 to 21 May 2012. The total of 66 from
22 different families, where as five (5) collections unidentified. The largest family of
macrofungi was found during the trip was Polyporaceae (6 collections) and the lowest was
Clavipitaceae (1 collection).
3. Joined the Ulu Mentawai Scientific Expedition under the Heart of Borneo project from 5 to 17
September 2012. This time Mycology Unit collaborated with UNIMAS for research at the Ulu
Mentawai area.
Soil Unit
1. Participated in Kubah Expedition in March 2012.
2. Collected data for the implementation of the hyperspectral study within Kuching Wetland N.P.
and Bako N.P.
3. Collected soil data in Totally Protected Areas (TPAs).
4. Participated in the Ulu Mentawai expedition in September 2012.
5. Established research plots for the plantation in Sabal Model Forest Reserve to monitor growth
of selected species.
