FOREST DEPARTMENT SARAWAK
ANNUAL REPORT 2009
GENERAL REVIEW
The year 2009, otherwise known as the action year, was a
meaningful and challenging year for the Forest Department
Sarawak as it was finally re-activated. As in 2008, the
Department underwent thorough restructuring or so called as
the planning year. After the restructuring exercise, the
Department had clear task to be accomplished for the year.
The staff either seconded or deployed to other agencies were
called back. In mid 2009, most of the former staff came back
to join and serve the Department after the ‘revival’ of the
Forest Department Sarawak.
Remarkably, our staff showed an increase in motivation with strong sense of belonging,
team work, dedication, adaptability and stoicism. Operation had started and most of the
divisions or units had their own responsibility based on the Inter-Agency Standard
Operating Procedures (SOP) for Performance of Forestry Functions which were introduced
by the State government. These SOP are the guidelines for the divisions and Department
as a whole to strengthen the operation.
Besides our attempts to keep these key functions in place, much time was expended in
preparing for the different working conditions after the restructuring. All the staff engaged
in the new working environment rapidly. The Department saw an assortment of activities
were carried out by the restructuring especially in the second half of 2009. Some of the
research activities were done and enforcement activities including patrolling of various log
checking stations and aerial patrolling over national parks were intensified.
The year 2009 saw the continuous collaboration between the State government and the
Japanese counterpart in certain area of study particularly in population dynamics and
community ecology of insects on the forest canopy and the studying of ant-homopteran
interactions on Macaranga myrmecophytes at Lambir National Park. This cooperation
