CRAUN Research is tasked to undertake research and development (R&D) on sago crop and sago
starch industry in Sarawak.It had successfully mass produced sago planting materials via tissue
culture, developed smart agriculture practices, farm mechanization initiatives, zero-waste sago
milling concept, creating innovative food and non-food products from sago starch and its biomass
in line with Sarawak Government’s Post Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to develop the
State’s based on digital economy.
PRODUCT AND TECHNOLOGIES
CLONAL PLANTING MATERIAL
Sago tissue culture is core research of CRAUN with the main focus is to mass
propagate the production of high yielding sago clonal planting materials to
support the sago smallholders and sago industry as a whole. Sago clonal
(Metroxylon sagu) are nursed in polybag in the green house during acclimatization
stage for 6 months before field planting.
Banana clonal variety ‘kepok’ and ‘tanduk’ are nursed at the green house during
acclimatization stage for 4 months duration before field planting. Banana (Musa
spp.) tissue culture approach facilitates mass production of plantlets/ time. Using
tissue culture, the possibility to develop healthy planting material is the key to good
crop stand in the field.
