KUCHING: The faces of 150 children from single parent families lit up as Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib arrived at the Boulevard Shopping Mall here to take them for a shopping spree under the ‘Sinaran Aidilfitri 2012’ event yesterday.
The children, aged five to 15 years, had waited on a temporary stage as early as 10.45am.
When the chief minister and Ragad were led towards the stage at about 11.30am, a festive song ‘Gemuruh’ was played to welcome them.

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak described national diving queen Pandelela Rinong’s win of the bronze medal at the Olympic Games as evidence that Malaysians can be successful on the world stage.
Such an achievement, which everyone can be proud of, required hard work and a great determination to succeed, he added.
“This morning my wife (Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor) and I woke up for sahur and we received the news, just like all other Malaysians, that a child of Sarawak had created history for our country.
“Pandelela, a Bidayuh, won a bronze medal in the 10 metre springboard diving event. She is small in stature but her spirit is big,” he said during the breaking of fast at the Sarawak State Assembly Building in Petra Jaya, here Friday.

KUCHING: The Barisan Nasional (BN) government’s development plans require the full support and cooperation of the people to become a reality.
Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this included the Darul Hana mega project for his constituency of Santubong.
“It needs the people’s support and cooperation to make things happen. Or, nothing will happen,” he said when breaking the fast with the less fortunate at Kampung Pulo Ulu on Wednesday.

KUCHING: Assistant Public Health Minister Dr Jerip Susil yesterday suggested local authorities to consider some measure of hygiene in the Ramadan stalls, to prevent communicable diseases.
He said although the overall cleanliness of the Ramadan bazaar is satisfactory, strict practices of hygiene are important to prevent communicable diseases.
Dr Jerip noted that there were some stall owners who did not wear proper attire such as apron and cap.
“I have done a walkabout at the Ramadan bazaar and overall the cleanliness is satisfactory.
“However, there are some stall owners who do not wear proper attire such as apron and cap, and the food not covered, leaving it open,” he said in his SMS when contacted yesterday.

KUCHING: A large scale fundraising programme involving all non-governmental organisations (NGOs) organised by the Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development will be held in October, among which the objectives are to promote a caring society and recruit new volunteers.
Its minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said the ‘Sarawak Volunteers Walk of Love; We Care, We Share’ is expected to be held on October 6, where each NGO will carry out its own fundraising activity.
