VISION LEGISLATION
To be an agency of excellence in the management, conservation and protection of tropical forests.


Forest Department Sarawak is guided in its duties, functions and responsibilities by the following
MISSION ordinances and rules:

To manage and develop the forest resources towards optimizing the socio-economic development of
the State and maintenance of environmental stewardship.

3. The National Parks and Nature Reserves Ordinance, 1998
1. To constitute areas of forest as Forest Reserves, Protected Forests, Communal Forests,
National Parks, Nature Reserves and Wildlife Sanctuaries; 4. The National Parks and Nature Reserves Regulations, 1999

2. To issue licences and permits under the Forests Ordinance (Cap 126), National Parks and 5. The Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998
Nature Reserves Ordinance, 1998 and the Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998;
6. The Wild Life Protection Rules, 1998
3. To impose and collect royalties, premiums, fees and other payments due to the Government;
7. The Wild Life (Edible Birds‟ Nests) Rules, 1998
4. To regulate production and export of logs from Sarawak; 8. The Forests (Planted Forests) Rules, 1997

5. To compound offences under the Forests Ordinance (Cap 126), the National Parks and Nature
Reserves Ordinance, 1998 and the Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998. 9. The Sarawak Forestry Corporation Ordinance, Cap 17



POLICY

It is the forest policy of the Government of Sarawak to:

1. Reserve sufficient forest land for the benefit of the present and future inhabitants of the country:

a. For the assurance of the sound climate and physical condition of the country and
safeguarding soil fertility; supplies of water for domestic and industrial use, irrigation and
general agricultural purpose, and the prevention of damage by flooding and erosion to river
and agriculture land;

b. For the supply in perpetuity and at moderate prices of all forms of forest produce that can be
economically produced within the country and that are required by the people for agricultural,
domestic and industrial purpose under a fully developed national economy.

2. Manage the productive forests of the Permanent Forest Estate with the objective of obtaining the
highest possible revenue compatible with the principle of sustainable yield and with the primary
objective as set out above.

3. Promote, as far as may be practicable, thorough and economical utilization of forest products on
land not included in Permanent Forest Estate, prior to the alienation of such land.

4. Foster, as far as may be compatible with the prior claims of local demand, profitable export
trades in forest produce.

*** The Forest Policy was approved by the Governor in Council in 1954 and remains unchanged.
