KUCHING: Over 3,000 people took part in the World Heart Day 2017 celebration at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex here yesterday – the largest attendance ever recorded for the event in the state.
According to Tanjong Datu assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu, who is also a member of Sarawak Heart Foundation (SHF) board of trustees, the event which coincided with Heart Run 2017, managed to draw a big participation. She viewed this as a good sign of awareness among members of the public of the importance of exercising.

KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will help to legalise all unlicensed lodging houses under its jurisdiction.
Commission member Dato Wee Hong Seng said DBKU has to step in because these lodging houses have all this while been very pro-business.

AS Sarawak ushers in Malaysia Day, it is a crucial to remember its first milestone in the oil and gas (O&G) industry, which started in Miri 107 years ago.
The first Sarawak Oil Mining Lease was signed by Rajah Charles Brooke in London in 1909, followed by the send-off by Shell of its senior geologist Dr Josef Theodor Erb and former Baram Division Resident Dr Charles Hose to Miri in 1910.
The first exploratory well was drilled on Aug 10, 1910 using an oil rig engineered by a Canadian named McAlpine – the factor contributing to the place being named ‘Canada Hill’.

SIBU: Fifty-five per cent of the 19,822 school uniform vouchers issued by Yayasan Sarawak have been disbursed to school-children across the state within a span of four months.

MIRI: Ministry of Women Development, Family and Community plans to set up autism centres in Sarawak and Sabah.
Its minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said the first autism centre under Permata Kurnia would be a model for other centres in the two states.

Almost Half Million OKUs Registered With Welfare Dept — Rohani

MIRI: A total of 433,952 people with disabilities (OKU) in the country have registered with the Welfare Department.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dato Sri Rohani Abdul Karim said of the number, people with learning disabilities accounted for 151,954 or 35 percent while 16,461 autistic persons make up 3.7 percent.
For Sarawak, Rohani who is also Batang Lupar MP said the number of registered OKU was 29,872 with 36.3 percent (10,842) having learning problems while autism accounted for 3.6 percent (1,078).
Speaking to the media after officiating at an autism seminar held at a hotel here yesterday Rohani said her ministry welcomed suggestions from parents that can contribute to efforts to design specific programmes for their autistic children.
