KUCHING: The reopening of the domestic tourism sector will accelerate the country’s economic recovery as many sub-economic sectors are closely related to the tourism industry, said federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said sub-sectors such as hotels, homestays, transportation, food and beverage, and tour guides will see a boost now that domestic holidays and travel have been allowed under the coming Recovery Movement Control Order, announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday.

“As a gesture of supporting the Prime Minister, I urge the people across the country to take this opportunity to stimulate the country’s tourism, arts and culture industries.

“There are many unique tourism products that await us to experience and appreciate, including eco-tourism, visiting museums and handcraft products,” she said in a statement.

Nancy also called on tourism players in the country, who comprise different economic segments and come from all walks of society, to continue producing truly innovative and creative products.

“However, at the same time, we must carry out our activities by adapting to the new norms of living and adhere to all standard operating procedures listed by the National Security Council and Ministry of Health, to keep the Covid-19 outbreak under control,” she added.
