SIBU: A total of 86 out of 110 Kemuyang Development Project affordable homes are expected to be completed by early next year.

Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health Dr Annuar Rapaee said all 110 detached units would be built by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) using the industrialised building system (IBS).

He said the first phase would involve 58 units for the extended families of Kampung Datu Lama/Kampung Hilir fire victims.

Overall, the project would fulfil the housing needs of the extended families of Kampung Datu, Kampung Hilir, Kampung Nangka, and Kampung Bandong villagers.

“There are four types of houses to be built, some on stilts, while others landed. The first 86 units under phase one are expected to be completed early next year.

“But of 110 units to be built by HDC, 58 units have been taken by extended families of fire victims. The rest I can’t reveal at the moment but it is meant for redevelopment of Kampung Datu, which will be announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he told a press conference after a site visit yesterday.

He explained that with IBS, each house could be built within 21 days.

Dr Annuar added that there are 813 lots on around 300 acres in Kemuyang.

“There are two areas being developed there, namely blocks 12 and 13. HDC will build 110 units in block 12, while Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) will build 76 units (block 13).”

A total of 61 houses in Kampung Datu Lama/Kampung Hilir were razed to the ground on June 20, 2013, displacing 143 families.

The Sarawak government has so far built 36 houses to resettle the fire victims in Kampung Datu Baru.

Under the Hardcore Poor Housing Programme (PPRT), 15 houses have already been completed, while another 15 are nearing completion, with construction for another nine units to start next month.

Dr Annuar explained that the PPRT houses are provided for free, while the 36 units in Kampung Datu Baru and 58 in Kemuyang are heavily subsided by the Sarawak government, with the families only required to pay for the building costs.
