LAWAS: A Hong Kong-based company has expressed interest to set up an oil refinery plant here after carrying out a feasibility study on the project.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg disclosed that he had received a letter from the company two months ago stating its interest.

He said this at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the RM 50 million Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs) Lawas campus in Banting, Lawas yesterday.
“I have received the letter two months ago (for the proposed refinery) and I have instructed Awang Tengah to follow this up,” he said.

Earlier Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the chief minister had instructed him to find an investor for the proposed refinery planned for Lawas.
Abang Johari said the investor cited political stability and harmony in the state as a major factor in its decision to set up the refinery in Lawas .

He added that the proposed project is part of the development plans for Lawas up to 2030 under the Northern Development Agency (NDA).

On Centexs Lawas the chief minister said it was established to produce skilled manpower to complement the development roadmap of northern Sarawak.

The strategic location of Lawas, a short distance from Bintulu O&G hub where SCORE has already secured RM 33 billion worth of investment would open up opportunities for skilled workers making Lawas an appropriate location for the third CENTEXS to be set up in the state after Kuching and Lundu
