Climate and Natural Resources
Sarawak is relatively untouched by natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes and tropical cyclones. It has an equatorial climate with relatively uniform temperature, high humidity and abundant rainfall.
Sarawak is one of the world’s largest exporters of tropical timber and the Government places high emphasis on value-added processing, having implemented a Log Export Restriction Policy and promoted downstream processing by establishing several industrial areas designed to meet the requirements of integrated timber-based operations.
Sarawak is rich in both metallic and non-metallic mineral resources such as silica sand, kaolinitic clay and coal, which offers enormous potential for value-added processing. It also has high quality kaolinitic and ball clay deposits suitable for use in the manufacture of ceramic products.
Vast reserves of natural resources promise great opportunities in the field of biotechnology, and forest resources may yet prove to be a major source of discovery.
The State is thus capable of sustaining a wide range of resource based industries, with very strong potential for investment in petroleum, petrochemical, agro, bio-tech and forestry.
The main priorities and promoted areas of investment are:
- Timber
- Wood Based
- Agro Based & Food Processing
- Petrochemical & Gas
- Palm Oil Based
- Advanced Ceramics
- Biotechnology
- Aquaculture
- Shipbuilding
- Electrical and Electronic
- Electrical & Electronics
- Biotechnology
