Satok Area To Be New Commercial Hub

FOUR-DAY EVENT: Abang Johari sounds the gong to launch the Satok Fest.

KUCHING: Satok area will be a new commercial hub for Petra Jaya, as well as an attraction for both foreign and local visitors.

Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said with the opening of Medan Niaga Satok on Tuesday (Jan 1), a trip to Kuching will not be complete if visitors do not drop by to shop and dine.

“From its state-of-the-art waste management including waste water treatment to comfortable stalls equipped with water and electricity, this is a permanent site for the Satok Market. It is comfortable for both traders and customers. They don’t have to go through traffic jams and congestion faced previously at the old site.

“Initially there were doubts about moving, but once it is properly promoted and known to be a strategic spot, traders will move,” he said when launching the annual Satok Fest at Medan Niaga Satok on Friday.

Abang Johari said many quarters are working to ensure that Medan Niaga Satok, said to be the biggest market of its kind in Malaysia, starts off well.

“This is set to be an attraction for visitors, including those who go on the river cruise. They can drop by to eat and buy things and enjoy the scenery of the riverside.

“All these are part of plans by the state leaders to ensure that everyone will benefit. We need support from everyone to transform Satok and Petra Jaya in general so that the area will continue to prosper,” he said.

Abang Johari said Phase 2 for Medan Niaga Satok and the Kubah Ria area will include theatre for performances and an electronic billboard.

“We will have a theatre, which will provide opportunity to our own talents to perform and showcase the colourful cultures of the many ethnic groups in Sarawak.

“We also plan for an electronic billboard, which will display events that are happening in Satok. This will be the latest technology for the area to make it the most attractive commercial hub.”

Meanwhile, RTM Sarawak Broadcasting Department deputy director Fee Lin Chew explained that the Satok Fest is an RTM Sarawak product to promote RTM as well as a platform to interact and cooperate with local entrepreneurs so that they will advertise their products on RTM.

“We have exceeded our target for advertising revenue this year, with a total of RM1.2 million collected.

“Medan Niaga Satok is our ninth and final location for this year, after going to eight different locations throughout the state,” she said.

The four-day Satok Fest will see booths selling various products as well as performances to entertain visitors.

It will close with a grand finale concert on Dec 31 to welcome the New Year.
